Should You Do The Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Disney World?
There are no shortages of ways to spend money at the Walt Disney World Resort. If you are visiting Disney World between August 17th and October 31st one of your decisions should be whether to attend the MNSSHP ( Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party) or not.
Disney World Special Ticket Events
Disney World has added a number of special ticket events (meaning you pay extra to visit a special Disney World event above and beyond the normal park tickets). The two most sought after events are Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. Of the two our OnlyWDWorld Pick is the Halloween Party. The party is not cheap, but there are certain benefits for the Disney World fan that make it a worthwhile event
Highlights of MNSSHP
Disney World absolutely prefers to present a friendlier version of Halloween than the Universal Studios version. If you want to be scared then this is not the party for you. This is the family friendly version of Halloween with slightly scary villains and lots of Disney characters in delightful Halloween costumes.Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party can be summed up in the following areas:
- Disney Characters in costumes make memorable photo opportunities - From Mickey, Minnie Pooh, and others in unique costumes to Disney Villains and Jack Skellington making Halloween photo meet & greet opportunities, this is a great time to get special pictures taken with Disney characters.
- You can wear costumes at the Magic Kingdom and enjoy Halloween no matter what age you are. Guests are encouraged to wear costumes (within certain guidelines) for one of the few times of the year. One of our favorite parts of MNSSHP is seeing all of the families that are wearing their themed costumes during this event.
- The Boo To You Parade is hands down the BEST DISNEY PARADE of the year. People may argue with us, but this is truly the best Disney World parade. It is shown twice during each event and you should plan on watching it both times. From the ride of the Headless Horseman on a real horse to the appearance of the Hitchhiking Ghosts from the Haunted Mansion, this is without a doubt Disney's Best Parade.
- Hallowishes Fireworks. The fireworks show during the party is a special one that includes special effects and fireworks that are much more spread out around the park then your typical nighttime fireworks. Of course the show is set to a backdrop of special Disney Halloween themed songs and characters.
- Trick-or-Treatng - There are multiple trick-or-treating stations throughout the Magic Kingdom that give out candy to ALL trick-our-treaters, no matter your age and whether you are wearing a costume or not.
- The last special reason to attend is the special lighting, decorations, food items, and merchandise that is only available during the MNSSHP parties.
If you have the opportunity to choose one special Disney World Event then MNSSHP is the one event that you certainly want to choose. It provides fun for the entire family and special memories that are unique from any other Disney World Vacation

Disney World Characters In Costume
The MNSSHP presents a wide variety of Disney Characters to see during the evening. You will see Mickey Mouse and friends in their Halloween costumes. Snow White is known to make a meet-n-greet appearance with all 7 dwarfs. You may even get to get your picture taken with "A Nightmare Before Christmas" stars Jack Skellington and Sally.
Disney Villains are also out in force and perform a stage show multiple times during the event and stick around after to pose for pictures with guests.
Disney World Guests Get To Wear Costumes
This is one of the very few times the guests are encouraged to wear costumes into the park, so don't pass up this opportunity. There are a few rules including No Full Masks and no dangerous looking weapons. Have fun and be creative or support your favorite characters.
Some of the fun during the night is seeing all of the great costumes that the other guests came up with!
Trick-or-Treating for candy at the Magic Kingdom
There are multiple dedicated trick-or-treating locations throughout the park that are handing out candy continuously throughout the party to EVERYONE.
Boo To You Halloween Parade
The Boo To You Parade is kicked off each evening with a gallop through the park by the headless horseman. Quite an impressive sight to see!
The parade itself is shown twice per night of the party, and we would recommend seeing the parade both times. It is that good! The parade combines classic Disney Characters having fun and some of the darker elements of Disney having their night to shine!
The Haunted Mansion has some great elements for the parade including grave diggers, ballroom dancers, and Hitchhiking Ghosts.
This is about as scary as it gets during this family friendly party.
Hallowishes Fireworks
Disney World certainly know how to do fireworks and the Hallowishes fireworks display is one of their best. This is an absolute must to see in person. Pictures or YouTube videos cannot do it justice.
Must Do Disney World Special Event
If you are considering what Disney World "extra' Event you should do, make sure that Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween party is on your list. This is one that every Disney World fan should try to visit at least once. Focus on seeing the characters, the shows, and the parades and don't worry about riding the attractions during this all too fast five hour event.

In case you’re a Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom newbie, SOTMK is an in-park interactive experience that allows guests join Merlin in a quest to defeat a team of Disney villains who are scheming to take over the park. Guests use maps to search for villain’s lairs throughout the park. When they find a magic portal, guests use spell cards that each feature a different magical power to foil a villain’s plan. This complimentary experience begins in the Firehouse on Main Street, U.S.A., where you can pick up everything you need to join in the fun.
This year’s special event card features the Helmsman pirate from the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.
The Pirate Helmsman’s Bombardment card will be distributed in addition to the regular Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom card packs (yes, you can still pick up both while attending the party). Guests must show their party ticket and event wristband in order to get one.

Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party Returns To Disney World
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party has returned to the Magic Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort for 23 nights of Halloween fun. This family friendly Halloween party is suitable for all ages and it also is one of the very few times where guests are encouraged to wear costumes in the Magic Kingdom theme park.
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party
In what is now a fall tradition Disney World has expanded the Halloween season to the middle of September to allow more Disney World Guests to partake in this fun event. Party goers young and old are encouraged to dress up in costume and have fun along with all of your favorite Disney Characters who are also in costume for the party.
The Magic Kingdom certainly gets a "Halloween" make-over that is apparent during the day, but it looks extra special at night as the decorations, jack-o-lanterns, and other effects look their best in the night time lighting. Even the night time fireworks presentation is re-worked to the Halloween theme (called Happy HalloWishes) that makes it extra special.
Boo To You Parade
The highlight of the evening is the Boo To You Parade which is shown twice at each party. Here you will see special floats and the Disney Characters in special Halloween Costumes. The Haunted Mansion also gets special representation in this parade with multiple floats.
The parade always starts off with a ride of the headless horseman.
Disney Characters abound during this parade both on the floats and walking the parade route.
MNSSHP is also a great time to see your favorite Disney Villains. They appear to be in an especially good mood during this event and there are chances during the evening to get your photo taken with them.
The ghoulish dancers that recreated the ballroom dancing of the Haunted Mansion precede the special floats dedicated to the featured Magic Kingdom Attraction for Halloween.
Speaking of attractions, most of the park attractions are open throughout the party, so make sure that your costumes are safe to wear on the attractions.
Plan Your Night To Attend
There are 23 nights to choose from to attend Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party for 2012:
- Sept. 11, 14, 18 21, 25, 28, 30;
- Oct. 4, 5, 8, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 21, 22, 23, 25, 28, 30 and 31;
- Nov. 2.
This party is what is called a "hard ticketed event." This means that a separate admission is required and your normal Park Admission will not get you in. The Magic Kingdom will close at roughly 7:00 pm each evening as the party begins. All who do not have a ticket will be asked to leave the park at the time. The MNSSHP will run from 7:00 pm until 12:00 Midnight.
Like most Disney World Special Events, we would not recommend this for first time Disney World Guests. The reason is that there is so much of Disney World to take in you will already by overwhelmed and there is not a need to go to the extra expense during that initial visit. If you have been to Disney World a couple of times, then this party may be what you are looking for in terms of something different to try and experience. The ticket prices are steep, but it is a fun night. It is most enjoyed when you are in costume. It is not required, but if you are spending that much money to go to a Halloween Party, then by all means go in costume and enjoy yourself.
The only Haunted House during the party is the Disney World Haunted Mansion. You won't find anything gory or bloody. The only scares are the Disney Villains being themselves.
Lastly, we would be remiss if we didn't mention the trick-or-treating. Everyone, the young and the young at heart is given a bag for trick-or-treating and is welcome to go through the designated lines throughout the park to receive candy. You do NOT need to be accompanied by a child to receive candy.
The best advice is to go and have fun. It is a party after all!
