When last year's FREE Dining Promotion was announced my family already had reservations at a Disney Vacation Club (DVC) Resort during mid-August. We are DVC members and were going to use our points for our Resort stay and purchase the Disney Dining Plan for myself, my wife, and my children ages 10 & 12 at the time.
When the FREE Dining Plan Promotion was announced I did the math and was surprised to discover that what I was going to pay to get the Disney Dining Plan was slightly more than what it costs to stay at a Disney World Moderate Resort.
We chose to cancel our DVC Resort reservation to save our points for a future trip and use the cash we were going to spend on just the Disney Dining Plan to get the Disney Dining Plan and a resort room at the Caribbean Beach Resort.
The Magic Your Way Park Tickets that are required to get the package were upgraded after we got there to annual passes that we were going to purchase anyway.

You have such great info about WDW!! I just had a question that hopefully you will be able to answer- With the Epcot flower and garden festival- after May 16th do they take it all down? We are going to be there sometime around then and I was just wondering if all the flowers will be gone? Thanks- Holly
Holly - Thanks for the comment. They do start taking down displays and removing topiaries and special gardens, but it does not happen instantly. There should still be plenty of flowers remaining if you visit near that time. The landscaping at Epcot is always wonderful any time of the year, but after the Flower & Garden Festival it is not quite to that same level.
I'm not sure how you got to your numbers. Each dining plan costs $39.99 per day; however, a free dining package costs exactly the same as a MYW package without dining. Therefore, at no matter which resort you choose, you save the same amount per day. You're not actually saving on the hotel room at all but you aren't paying for the majority of your food on the trip. I believe free dining is a good discount option but not necessarily the best, especially depending on the resort you choose. The touringplans.com blog last year wrote an article that showed you do not save money booking free dining at a deluxe resort and actually would spend about $100 more on the free dining package than you would booking the package and paying for dining.
Scott - Thank you for your comment. You are right in the fact that this offer becomes less attractive for the Deluxe rooms and generates the largest "savings" for Value and Moderates Resorts. For Value Resorts you receive the Quick Service Dining plan which normally costs $31.99 per adult per day. Fr Moderates you receive the Disney Dining Plan which normally costs $41.99 per day for adults.
If you look at what your total vacation cost at Disney World will be, including food purchases, you will find that this offer can save you more than the other typical Disney World offers for stays in Value or Moderate Resorts. This offer also saves you the most if you have 4 people in a room.
