2012 Disney World Marathon Weekend Celebrates 19th Year!
The 2012 Disney World Marathon Weekend is celebrating its 19th year with a record number of runners participating in a several events this weekend. There are expected to be over 56,000 runners participating in events ranging from the Family Fiesta 5K Featuring the Three Caballeros (8,000 runners), Disney World Half Marathon (26,500 runners), Disney World Marathon (16,500 runners).
There is no other feeling like participating in one of Disney's Endurance Races. There is something really special about running through one or more of the theme parks either before it has opened or after it has closed. The Disney Cast Members and local volunteers do a great job of supporting the runners during the races to make it a really special and memorable event for all involved.
There definitely is a special feeling of pride and accomplishment after completing the races and earning your medal. Whether it is the Donald Duck medal for finishing the Disney World Half Marathon, the Mickey Mouse Medal for finishing the Disney World Marathon, or the Goofy Medal for completing both races on consecutive days it is hard to describe the feeling.
For over 99% of the people participating they have no interest in winning the race, it is all about finishing the race and hopefully beating your personal best time or sticking to your own goal. The people who are running around you are extremely supportive, encouraging each other to keep going and hang in there. It is a special feeling that is very rewarding to know you have reached the finish line.
Best of Luck to all who are running in this year's races!

Running In Disney's Wine & Dine Half Marathon
Running in Disney's Inaugural Wine & Dine Half Marathon on Saturday October 2nd was an incredible experience. It was Disney World's first night time Half Marathon and it was my first Half Marathon as a runner. Like many people, I specifically chose Disney World to be the place to run my first Half Marathon and there is a reason for that. The running events at Disney World are like no other. The location and atmosphere during the runs here make them an unbelievable time to remember.
Disney's Wine & Dine Half Marathon
The experience for me started on Saturday afternoon as I went to the ESPN Wide World Of Sports Complex to pick up my race packet. This is a beautiful sports facility that few Disney World visitors ever venture into. Not only does it serves as the Spring Training home for the Atlanta Braves, it hosts numerous sporting events year round for thousands of athletes.
During the weekend, in addition to packet pick-up runDisney conducted many informational seminars and had a number of running, fitness, and nutrition related vendors on hand to visit.
About 7:00 pm my family and I drove from the Animal Kingdom Lodge to Epcot to catch a bus to the start of the race back at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. If you stayed at one of the host hotels, you could take Disney Transportation directly from your hotel to the start, but the rest of us had to drive to Epcot. Luckily Epcot can handle a lot of traffic because around 7:30 pm it was very congested from all of the runners arriving.
Disney brought in extra non-Disney buses to shuttle all of the people. Considering the number of people they transported it happened relatively smoothly.
Once we arrived at WWOS there was a large field where people where mingling, visiting, stretching, and relaxing until race time. In addition to the roughly 100 port a johns that were there, there was also a DJ entertaining the crowd and encouraging some large scale group dancing.
At 9:15 pm it was time for the runners to head to their corrals. There were nearly 11,000 runners participating in all. I was fortunate enough to be seeded in corral B where I could barely have sight of the starting line. There were probably 2,000 - 3,000 in front of me and 8,000 - 9,000 behind me.

The course we ran went from the Wide World Of Sports to Disney's Animal Kingdom then to Disney's Hollywood Studios, and finally ended just outside of Epcot's World Showcase.
It is hard to describe the number of people crowded together awaiting the start of the race. We were literally shoulder to shoulder packed into our corrals. Disney attempted to place the faster people near the front and the slower towards the back to avoid as much conflict as possible.
The starting gate is pictured above. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse joined them to send us off in style.
At the start there was a brief, but impressive fireworks display that let us know that our wait was over and the time we had been training for had begun. For me it still took about 3 minutes to make my way to the official starting line and get my race underway.
Background
I never considered myself a runner. I detested running when training for baseball and other sports while growing up and considered it as a form of punishment. A couple of years ago my kids had a program at their elementary school called "Go Far". This program allowed 4th and 5th graders to training for 6 to 10 weeks to prepare for a 5K run. At the end of their training they held a 5K and invited parents to participate. It was more about completing the journey than training to be future Olympians. I thought it was a great program and I "ran" worth my children to support them and encourage them.
A couple years later I hear about the "Race For The Taste 10K" at Disney World during the Food & Wine Festival. I was planning on being at Disney World during the 2009 Race For The Taste 10K, so I decided to sign up and a haphazardly trained for it and ran it last year. I completed the race totally exhausted, but came away from it enthused by the wonderful experience of running a race at Disney World.
When they announced that they were no longer going to have the Race For The Taste 10K, I was disappointed, but I became intrigued when the new Wine & Dine Half Marathon was announced.
I took comfort from a number of sources of people that started running and were now successfully completing Half and even Full Marathons. I decided to make a New Year's Resolution to start running regularly so that I could complete the Wine & Dine Half Marathon. I logged nearly 500 miles in preparing for this day.
The Race
This brings us back to the race. The first mile and a half was like negotiating a big city traffic jam at rush hour, speed up, slow down, pass the slower traffic, try not to get in a fender bender. My first mile ended up being the slowest mile of the race. The second mile was closer to my normal pace and afterward I slowly started to make up for the lost time during the first mile.
The fact that the race started at 10:00 pm certainly added some interesting elements. Disney did a great job lighting up the course, although there were still some areas that were rather dark and could have stood to have additional lighting.
For those of you that have never competed in a large running race, it is unlike other sporting events. It is unique because of the lack of noise. You hear the pounding of the feet and some breathing, but mostly it is quiet except for the occasional supporter adding words of encouragement to the strangers running by.
After we exited the WWOS we turned left and made the 3 mile trek to Disney's Animal Kingdom. Along the road there was various entertainment provided by Disney. We saw stilt walkers, and Disney Characters. We saw floats from the Spectromagic Parade. We also saw live bands complete with stage, drum kits, and electric guitars, singing as the runners streamed by.
I think that running through Animal Kingdom at night in the near dark was the most interesting. It was a totally different experience that visiting the park during the day. It was tempting to veer off the course to run into the empty queue for Expedition Everest to see if they would take me for one quick ride.
After leaving the Animal Kingdom there was a long segment to get to our next destination - Hollywood Studios. The frequent entertainment and water stops every 1 1/2 miles helped pass the time through this stretch. Unlike some small town local race, you were never running alone, there were always people running around you and you could get strength from seeing all of the others continuing on also.
Finally after mile 9 we made our way into Disney's Hollywood Studios. We came in a back entrance behind the Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror and started our way through the park. We got to go past many of my favorite attractions. Again the park takes on a totally different look in the dimly lit night when none of the attractions are open.
One part of the race that deserves note are the great volunteers and Disney Cast Members. Whether they worked the water stations or just stood along the race course to tell the runners that they were doing a great job and they could make it. We may not have been able to say it while we were running, but we most definitely appreciated your effort and support. THANK YOU!!!
After leaving Disney's Hollywood Studios, it was certainly the home stretch. This is where your body gets tired, but you know the end is near, so you just keep running. The number of spectators during this stretch increased as curious on-lookers from the Boardwalk Area Resorts came out to watch and cheer.
Finally the Finish Line was near the International Gateway Entrance to Epcot. After making it through the Finish Line I made my way to collect my water and get the medal that I definitely earned.
I was then able to be reunited with my family that came to support me and was able to see me Finish. I was able to finish with a time of 1:57:21 and finished 644th out of the 11,000 who started the race. Not bad for my first Half Marathon!
The After Party
I cannot think of a better place for a party than at Epcot and there is no better time to be at Epcot than during the Food & Wine Festival. The after party lasted until 3:00 AM it gave the runners a chance to wind down and enjoy the festivities.
I also got to see my favorite Disney band - Mulch, Sweat, 'n Shears perform awesomely in the America Gardens Theater.
My only complaint about the After Party was that it was too crowed, either too many tickets were sold or Disney World needed to open up ALL of Epcot to spread out the crowds better. By keeping everyone in the World Showcase and not even opening up the shops and attractions, it made it much too crowded and diminished what was otherwise a great party.
Here is a picture of race winner Anton Van Zyl collecting his trophy during the awards ceremony.
Finally here is a picture of my family and I at 3:00 AM heading out of Epcot after a wonderful runDisney Event that I hope will be repeated again next year!
Disney's Wine & Dine Half Marathon Finish Line Party
Disney's Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend is just a little over a week away with its inaugural event happening October 1 - 3, 2010. There are few times of the year that generate more interest from Disney World fans than the start of the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. This year Disney decided to top themselves and increase the excitement by adding a night time Half Marathon and exclusive party at Epcot to help kick off this year's Food & Wine Festival.
Running At Disney World
Running was something that I was always lukewarm about. It wasn't something that I could ever get enough enthusiasm around starting. That was when I heard about the great running events that were hosted at Disney World. This piqued my curiosity.
In 2009, I decided to run in the Race For The Taste 10K that was annually held in conjunction with the Epcot Food & Wine Festival. I had never run in a 10K previously, but the thought of running a race that went through 2 Disney World Parks (Hollywood Studios and Epcot) while they were closed, got my interest up. I trained somewhat for the race and successfully participated in it last October. It was a wonderful experience shared with over 4,000 other runners..
Disney had announced that the 2009 running of the Race For The Taste would be the last and that it would be replaced with something different in 2010. Shortly thereafter Disney announced that in 2010 they would be moving up to running a Half Marathon in conjunction with the Food & Wine Festival and instead of running early in the morning, this race would happen at night.
Due to the longer length this race, which would adopt a different Half Marathon course than the one run with the Disney Marathon in January, it would actually run through 3 different Disney World Theme Parks (Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and finish in Epcot).
That had me hooked, and I have been training all year in order to work myself up to the Half Marathon Distance (13.1 miles). There is nothing like running with thousands of other runners through the Disney World Parks. It is truly an unforgettable experience.
Wine & Dine Half Marathon Finish Line Party
Taking full advantage of the Epcot Food & Wine Festival the other special change for 2010 is the addition of the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Finish Line Party that will be held in Epcot's World Showcase from 10:30 PM on October 2nd until 3:00 AM on October 3rd. This will be a hard ticket event at Epcot meaning that it will require a separate admission ticket similar to the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, and the party will start after the park has closed to normal guests. All registered half marathon and half marathon relay runners get free admission to the party. Additional friends and family can attend by purchasing the $35 per person tickets.
The $35 fee gets you entrance to the party as well as one complementary Food Item and one complementary drink item (alcoholic or non-alcoholic). Additional food and drink is available for purchase, just like at the Food & Wine Festival.
Details for Wine & Dine Half Marathon Finish Line Party have just been released and it sounds fantastic. All 26 of the Food & Wine Festival International Marketplace Kiosks will be in operation during the party serving up food to attendees. There will be three shows in the America Gardens Theatre during the evening, plus an awards ceremony for the top finishers. There will also Disney Character Meet & Greets and other special entertainment. The entire Epcot World Showcase will be part of the party!
Here is the link to the down loadable Finish Line Party Guide. This guide lists all of the International Food Marketplaces that will be open during the party and all of the food and drink options available for purchase. This will be like renting out the World Showcase with a few thousand of your running buddies and their families for a private party.
To purchase tickets for the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Finish Line Party (It needs a catchy acronym) call 407-WDW-IRUN! As of this writing the party is at 65% capacity so there is still time.
I am really looking forward to running in the Half Marathon and attending this special party. My family isn't running, but will get to enjoy the party while they wait for me to complete my running. Hopefully they will be able to tear themselves away from the food to see me cross the Finish Line of my first ever Half Marathon!
Shortly after the event expect to see another Only WDWorld post and a lot of pictures from the Finish Line Party and hopefully one with me wearing this proudly earned medal around my neck.
Run For Whatever Reason, Just Run
There are many reasons that people run during these Disney World Endurance Events. These are not all-star athletes in peak physical condition. Some of course are, but many are not. The great thing, no matter what the reason or inspiration, is that these people are running. They all deserve to be cheered, whether they finish first or last, they do finish, which is a big accomplishment.
Believe me when I say that once you run a Disney World you will be hooked. You may not be inspired to run all of the time, but you will be inspired and take away many fond memories of the event.

Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend October 1 - 2
The inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend is quickly approaching. To mark the beginning of the 15th Annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend will take place October 1 -2, 2010.
Previously the Disney Endurance Series event that was linked to the Epcot Food & Wine Festival was the Race For The Taste 10K. With the popularity of the longer races, 2010 brings the inaugural running of the Wine & Dine Half Marathon.
I am not only reporting about this for Only WDWorld, but will be running this race as well!
The special medal pictured above on the is what awaits all finishers of the Half Marathon, while another special medal is awarded to those who are running the half marathon as a 2 person relay. Either will be a treasured momento of the event.
New Half Marathon Course
This new race also features a new Half Marathon Course at Disney World. Instead of using the one seen during the Disney Marathon Weekend, this new course actually goes through 3 Disney World Theme Parks ( Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Epcot.)
Disney's Wine & Dine Half Marathon is a night race starting at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at 10:00 pm then heading to Disney's Animal Kingdom. Here we will get to run inside the park after closing travelling through each of the lands before exiting. This is always one of the highlights of running a race at Disney World.
After exiting Animal Kingdom we head back towards Disney's Hollywood Studios. That 4 mile stretch between Animal Kingdom and Hollywoood Studios is what I anticipate to be the toughest part of the race. Once we enter Hollywood Studios, again we get to cover most of the areas of the park after closing. It is a neat feeling to see the almost empty park with the mostly quiet sounds of shoes hitting the pavement.
Whether you are a runner or not, this again is a reason to participate in one of the Disney Endurance Events. You can't get this experience from a normal park visit.
After exiting Hollywood Studios it is a short distance (relatively) to get to Epcot. Here we fight exhaustion with the knowledge that we have almost reached our goal. It is a beautiful stretch when you get to the Boardwalk Area, and it will all be lit up as we approach the International Gateway of Epcot.
Finally we reach the Finish Line as we enter Epcot and are rewarded by an exclusive after party that extends until 3:00 am in Epcot. Non-runner and family and friends can purchase tickets to the after race party to meet their runners and enjoy the party.
What a way to kick off the Food & Wine Festival!
Entire Weekend Of Activities
Like most of the Disney Endurance Series Events, the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend is truly an entire weekend of events.
On Saturday morning (Oct 2nd), there will be Mickey's Halloween 5K that will include a course that runs through the Magic Kingdom. The participants will receive not only the medal pictured above, but only get a ticket to the Oct. 3rd Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party (MNSSHP.)
There will also be shorter kids races and a Health & Fitness Expo to round out the event.
Weekend Filled With Firsts and Excitement
The October 1 - 2 Weekend will be an exciting time to be at Disney World. Disney's Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend will be the first:
- Night Half Marathon At Disney World
- Half Marathon to run through 3 Disney World Theme Parks
- Half Marathon to have its own 4 1/2 hour after race party.
- 5 K run through the Magic Kingdom
I am excited and looking forward to this weekend and hope to meet many of you during this event. Please add a comment if you are running, so I know to look for you.

Princesses Rule During 2010 Disney's Princess Half Marathon Weekend
This coming weekend, March 5th – 7th, will mark the 2nd installment of Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend held at the Walt Disney World Resort.
Princesses Rule!
This Disney Endurance Series Event is especially designed to cater to and encourage women to participate in the distance running events. Disney will help each participant find their "inner Princess" during the weekend schedule of activities.
Last year’s inaugural event was wildly successful with over 6,100 women completing the half marathon. This year’s Princess Half Marathon looks to be equally successful as the registration is nearing capacity.
Although the highlight of the weekend is the Princess Half Marathon which will be run on Sunday March 7th, there are events taking place throughout the entire weekend. From races for kids to The Princess & The Frog Royal Family 5K, the whole family can do more than just cheer for their favorite princess during the Princess Half Marathon.
Disney’s Fit For A Princess Expo
Disney’s Fit for a Princess Expo is a two-day celebration of women, focused on health and fitness! The Expo will be located in the Jostens® Center at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. This event will include seminars on training, racing, and nutrition, along with the opportunity to experience the latest in running and fitness equipment.
Disney’s Princess Half Marathon
The marquee event is of course the 13.1 mile half marathon. The course starts outside of Epcot and heads toward the Magic Kingdom. Upon entering the Magic Kingdom, the runners will pass through Tomorrowland, Cinderella Castle, and Frontierland. Then it is time to head back to Epcot and into the park, through Future World then past Spaceship Earth and on to the Finish Line.
It is certainly magical running a race that goes through two different Disney World Parks. Running anywhere else just doesn't compare to the thrill you get running at Disney World.
The course Map is pictured below.
You don’t have to be an expert runner to participate. Although there are prizes for the top finishers, running at a Disney World Endurance Series race is much more about the experience. Runners are only required to maintain a 16 minute per mile pace during the event in order to be allowed to complete the race and receive their hard earned medal.
Great Supporting Cast
While on the course there will be entertainment and Disney Characters to cheer on the runners. There are 18 points along the course where your family and friends can station themselves to cheer you on. There will also be over 1,000 volunteers staffing the Start Line, Course Monitor, Food Stop, Water Stop, and Finish Line locations during the Half Marathon on Sunday. This is a great event that is so much more than just the running on Sunday. The Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend benefits The Leukemia &Lymphoma Society® (LLS).
With the support of thousands of volunteers and participants in LLS’s Team In Training program, Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend will help blood cancer patients live better, longer lives.
Good Luck To All Runners! Enjoy Your Time As A Disney Princess!
Run All Year Long With The Disney Endurance Series

2010 Disney Endurance Series Schedule
This is the schedule for the remainder of 2010:
Champion 5K at ESPN The Weekend - February 27th at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This is the shortest event of the series and coincides with the ESPN The Weekend Events. The race starts at 7:00 am and the course will take you through Disney's Hollywood Studios before it opens.
Disney's Princess Half Marathon Weekend - March 5th - March 7th. This half marathon is for the women. In the inaugural event last year there were over 6,100 women that completed the half marathon. Disney Endurance Series
This series of races is for the serious and the not so serious runner. As long as you can meet the minimum pace requirements (usually around 15 minutes per mile) you are allowed to stay on the course until completion.
Speaking from experience there is something amazing about running with all of these people through a closed Disney World theme park. The feeling is amazing. The experience is hard to describe, so it needs to be shared.
If you are at all interested you should sign up and run one of these races. That will be all it takes and you will be hooked. Then you will be spending your time trying to figure out how to make your schedule work, so that you can participate in the next race.
Start training now and I hope to see you at a future race!
Walt Disney World Marathon Is Much More Than A Race
The Walt Disney World Marathon has become much more than a race, so much so, that the event has even been named the 2010 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend.
The Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is a 4 day extravaganza running from January 7th - 10th that features parties, Health & Fitness Expo, activites for kids, and 3 distance races: Disney-Pixar Up & Away Family Fun Run 5k, Walt Disney World Half Marathon, & the Walt Disney World Marathon. There are even programs for the spectators in addition to the ones for the thousands of runners.
The event is enormously popular. Last year there were 12,451 finishers in the Walt Disney World Half Marathon and an amazing 14,961 finishers in the Walt Disney World Marathon.
There are even an expected 7,500 participants in both races which occur on consecutive days. They are rewarded with the Goofy's Race and A Half Challenge Medal.
The course for the Disney World Half Marathon takes you through the Magic Kingdom and Epcot, while the Walt Disney World Marathon course runs through all four Disney World theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Animal Kingdom, & Disney's Hollywood Studios).
The highlights for the events of the weekend include:

Disney World's Race For The Taste 10K

This morning I represented Only WDWorld at the Disney World "Race for the Taste 10K". This was not only my first Disney Endurance Series Race, it was also my 1st ever 10k!
The day start by catching a taxi at 5:45 am to get from the Boardwalk Villas to Disney's Wide World of Sports, where the race started.
The amount of people that gathered before the race was amazing. I believe that there were nearly 4,000 runners as the race was listed as FULL on the website a couple of days prior to the event.
After everyone was staged according to expected pace levels we heard a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem and then it was time for the race to begin at 7:00 AM.
There was one wheelchair competitor in the 10K and she went first. Two minutes later the sea of runners started off to begin our adventure.
Not being a runner, I was amazed at the silence as hundreds of people were around me, but the only noise was the pounding of shoes on the pavement.
After the first mile the runners started to separate and it was a little easier to negotiate around people. I was always working to dodge in and out of traffic to find some open space and get to a comfortable pace.
After the 2 mile mark we entered Disney's Hollywood Studios. We entered the park at the rear and ran across the set of Lights, Motors, Action! and they projected the runners on the giant screen as we ran by.
We then worked our way through the park and left near the front entrance. It was then time for the path between Hollywood Studios and Epcot. It was nice to run by the Boardwalk, Swan, Dolphin, Yacht Club, and Beach Club Resorts.
The cast members staged at different places along the race course to encourage us was great. It really did help!
Once we got to Epcot, this was the part of the run that I had been imagining in my training for the past month. Only in real life I was more tired at this point than during my imaginary runs through Epcot.
Having all of the other people running with you really helped give you the energy to keep going. At one point in the race this lady told the guy that had stopped at the side that it was time to get going again. He didn't know her, but thanked her for helping him get re-motivated and start running again.
It was a great friendly event.
At the Finish Line Mickey Mouse himself was there to greet the Finishers.
The Finishers Medal is really cool and it is something that I will certainly remember. Although I was no where near the first finishers, my wife, serving as Only WDWorld's official photographer was able to capture both the men's and the woman's winner of the race.

After the race, there were four different food stations from the Food & Wine Festival that you could visit as each runner got 3 food coupons for participating.
For me, just finishing was enough, but as a bonus I finished right at my goal of 1 hour , so I am very happy. I would highly recommend a Disney Endurance Series Race for anyone to participate in. It is for the serious and the not so serious runner alike.
