Dear Disney World - Bring Back These Events from 2010

Each year Disney World introduces a plethora of new parades, shows, events, and food menu items. Many are temporary experiments. Some will never be seen from again, while others are slated to return. Here are two of the temporary “hits” introduced in 2010 that Disney World should definitely bring back again.

Taste of Africa Street Party
Think mini Epcot Food & Wine Festival located in the Harambe Village in the Africa section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and focused on African food and drink offerings. The Taste Of Africa Street Party was successful because it was offered only for a limited number of hours at the end of each day (immediately following Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade until closing) and for a limited number of days.

The energy from the Cast Members was at a high level and the entertainment and demonstrations definitely added to this event. It really gave a reason to spend the entire day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The food and drinks were great and it was also an event that could be enjoyed with the whole family. I actually had my entire family with me when I experienced it and we all had a great time.

Special Indiana Jones/Star Wars Stunt Show Spectacular

During the special Last Tour To Endor Event in July there was an extra special new show created for the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular that was only performed 3 times that night. This was an incredibly well-done show combining the two George Lucas masterpieces. It's official title is: Raiders Of The Lost Jedi Temple Of Doom: A Fan Film Of Epic Proportions.

The show appeals to both the Star Wars Fan and the Indiana Jones Fans. It takes the basic storyline of the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular that most Hollywood Studios guests are familiar with and adds a multitude of Star Wars Characters to the adventure.

The combining of Indiana Jones and Star Wars worked so well that it should become a new limited engagement show that is only seen during the Star Wars Weekends Events at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The video clips below were taken during the 1st ever performance of this show for a public audience on August 14th of 2010 at the Last Tour To Endor Event.

The show is too good not to be performed again, and the Star Wars Weekends crowd is the right audience for the show.

Too Good Not To Bring Back
So back to where we started....

Dear Disney World,
Please bring back the Taste Of Africa Street Party and the Raiders Of The Lost Jedi Temple Of Doom: A Fan Film Of Epic Proportions show in 2011. These were excellent introductions in 2010 and deserve to be shown again in 2011. Too many Disney World fans missed out on the opportunity to see them last year and it would be a shame if they never got another chance.

Disney World Top 6 Uses Of Audio Animatronics

In the latest installment of Disney World Top 6 we take a look at one of the hallmarks of Disney Imagineering: the Audio Animatronic Figures. We rank the Top 6 Disney World Uses Of Audio Animatronics in Attractions. This list is sure to stir up controversy since only 6 can make the list and that means many great Disney World attractions will not make the list.

Disney first gained recognition for including audio animatronics in the original Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland and later the breakthrough exhibits at the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair. Since then Disney Imagineers have constantly improved their inventions and have made some unbelievable creations.

Note: The Yeti used in Expedition Everest would have made the list, but is being excluded since it currently is unable to operate as it did when it was first installed (and we are still bitter about that!)

Disney World Top 6 Uses Of Audio Animatronics

6. The Great Movie Ride
The Wicked Witch of the West in the Great Movie Ride was the first of the A-100 line of audio animatronic figures that Disney Imagineers introduced, thereby creating a new level of realism. The movements are much smoother than earlier models. It is eerie how lifelike she looks.

5. Carousel Of Progress
It was impossible to leave the Carousel Of Progress off of this list. Although the attraction was originally designed for the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair and has been moved from New York to Disneyland to Disney World, this attraction is still a marvel. When you think of the state of technology at the time it was originally designed and the fact that it still holds up today, it is truly amazing.

4. Stitch’s Great Escape
This may be the only time that with all of the negative reviews that Stitch's Great Escape! makes a Top 6 list in a good way. The audio-animatronic figure of Stitch is state of the art and makes it worth it to come to this attraction to check it out.

3. Hall of Presidents
When it comes to advancing the realism of creating the audio animatronic human figure the Hall Of Presidents set the bar high. The recent redesign that added a speaking role for George Washington and the President Obama figure again utilized the latest advances in technology to create an incredible show that sometimes has you forgetting that the figures aren't real.

2. Dinosaur
When it comes to audio animatronics making an attraction thrilling and exciting, the life size dinosaur figures that you encounter in the Dinosaur - Countdown to Extinction attraction win the prize. These dinosaurs look real and move quickly and smoothly to create an exciting race through time. You quickly embrace the gentle herbivores and fear the hungry carnivores in this fast paced attraction.

1. American Adventure
Prepare to be impressed if you have never experienced the American Adventure in Epcot's World Showcase. This is truly a technological feat as you will encounter numerous lifelike figures from American History that add additional elements of movement never seen before. The standing, sitting, and walking that you see will leave you in awe of the Disney Imagineers that created them. If you watch this attraction with an eye to appreciate the technology invovled in making it happen, you will be even more amazed.

Without a doubt the American Adventure deserves the Top Spot in terms of Use of Audio Animatronics at Disney World.

Explaining The Disney Dining Plan

The Disney Dining Plan can be a great option to add to your Walt Disney World Vacation. For the first time user of the Disney Dining Plan it can be a bit overwhelming trying to understand how it works and how to proceed.

Disney Dining Plan – The Basics
The Disney Dining Plan (DDP) is a pre-paid meal plan for Disney World Vacationers that provides a lot of flexibility as to what you can eat and where you can eat. The plan is based upon the number of nights that you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort. You must purchase the plan for your entire party (in your Room) for the entire stay at the chosen Disney World Resort Hotel.

As the name implies the plan is paid for prior to your resort check-in for non-DVC (Disney Vacation Club Resorts) or at check-in for DVC Resorts. Since you know the amount that you will be spending on food ahead of time, this makes it easier to budget for your trip.

When you check-in you will be awarded a certain number of Dining Credits according to the numbers of nights that you are staying and the number of people in your party.

For the Disney Dining Plan each person receives for each night stay:

1 Table Service Credit
1 Quick Service Credit
1 Snack Credit

Example: If you have 6 people that are staying for 5 nights, you will receive:

          30 Table Service Credits ( 6 People X 5 Nights = 30)
          30 Quick Service Credits
          30 Snack Credits

An example of what was actually received at check-in at the Old Key West Resort. We had a party of 6 made up of 5 adults (ages 10+) and 1 child (ages 3 -9) staying for 5 nights. The Table Service meals are the only place where they make a distinction between Child and Adult.

These credits are encoded onto your Key To The World (KTTW) Room Key. Note: The family shares the “pool” of Dining credits instead of each person having their individual credits tied to just their KTTW Cards.

DDP Entitlements:
There are three different types of Dining Credits. Each allows the Guest to receive certain entitlements within a different Dining Category.

• Table Service Credit: This entitles the guest to his/her choice of entrée, non-alcoholic beverage, and dessert at a sit-down Table Service Restaurant. There are very few menu exclusions, and typically there are none. This means that you can choose any item on the menu for your entrée. This gives you a lot of flexibility and makes it easy for the entire family to choose what they like. The Table Service credit can also be used at a Buffet Style Restaurant to receive full buffet and a non-alcoholic beverage. There are over 35 different Table Service restaurants to choose from. Gratuities are not included so you will have to pay for these separately at the conclusion of each meal.

Disney World Table Service Restaurants tend to fill up during busy seasons, so it is important that you make reservations ahead of time. You can make reservations either at Disney On-line Dining Reservations or by calling 407-WDW-DINE. You may make reservations up to 180 days in advance.

• Quick Service Credit: This entitles the guest to his/her choice of entrée or combo meal, non-alcoholic beverage, and dessert at a Counter Service Style Restaurant. Disney World has a wide variety of Quick Service Class Restaurants that cover the gamut of food choices including: burgers, salmon, pork chops, Moroccan Cuisine, Sushi, Pasta, Salads, Chinese Food, and much, much more.

• Snack Credit: This entitles the guest to receive his/her choice of a number of items available from Disney World Quick Service Dining Locations and Snack Carts/Kiosks throughout Disney World. Items are typically considered single serving and cost approximately $4.00 and under. They are designated with a Snack Symbol, shown above, if they are available for purchase with a DDP Snack Credit.

How To Consume Dining Credits:
To redeem your Dining Credits you inform your server or cashier that you are using the Disney Dining Plan and then hand them your Key to The World Card. They will use the card to check your Disney Dining Plan Credit Balance and then debit the quantity of credits required for the food you ordered. You will receive a receipt detailing the transaction and showing you how many credits were used and how many are remaining.

The above picture is an example of the receipt that you receive after using a Disney Dining Plan Credit. In this example we purchased a Dole Whip Float from the Aloha Isle in the Magic Kingdom. It cost 1 Snack Credit (Note line that says: Entitlements Used: 1 ). Near the bottom of the receipt it lets you know how many of that category of DDP Credits are remaining. In this case there are 7 SNACK Credits Remaining.

There are no rules as to how many credits you can use on any specific day. It is entirely up to you! This flexibility allows you to plan your eating like you want to. If you want to eat at 2 Table Service Restaurants one day and none the next, you can do so. You spend the credits however you like until they are gone or until they expire. All credits expire on midnight of the day that you check out. Even if you check in to another Disney Hotel the credits remain good until midnight.

How To Beat The Summer Heat At Disney World

As the summer temperatures reach record levels it is a good time to think about how to stay cool at the Walt Disney World Resort.

If the best time for your family to vacation at Disney World is during the summer, then the Florida heat is something that you will have to contend with.

There are many ways to escape the heat at Disney World, whether you are looking to cool off a little or cool off a lot. Let's look at a list of some of your options:

Disney Resort Pools - The Walt Disney World Resorts all have pools for you to enjoy and there is no better time than during the summer. Many have slides and special splashing areas for young children. This is a great way to break up the day and cool off a little bit before you head back into the parks.

Disney Attractions That Get You Wet! - There are many Disney World attractions that will get you wet, from just a splash to a drenching downpour. The summer is the best time to enjoy the cooling off benefits of these attractions. Favorite Disney Attractions that get you wet are: Kali River Rapids & Splash Mountain (note: You actually get the wettest at the beginning of theSplash Mountain as you approach the area pictured above). Other attractions that may get you wet include: Maelstrom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Mickey's PhilharMagic, Pirates Of The Caribbean, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Muppet Vision 3-D, Voyage Of The Little Mermaid, & Captain EO.

Disney Park Misters - Within each of the Disney World Theme Parks there are several misters to help cool you off as you walk by. These are very refeshing and do a great job to beat the summmer heat. Club Cool At Epcot - The refreshing stop should be on every Epcot park visitors list, especially during the summer. Within this air conditioned building in Future World are a selection of FREE soft drinks to taste. You probably can't stay hydrated by visiting here alone (although I'm sure there are those who have tried), but you can quench your thirst by trying several of the chilled carbonated beverages.

Disney World Water Parks - For the ultimate "Get Wet" experience, try one of the Walt Disney World Resort's Water Parks - Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. All of the Disney World theming and detail that you love in their theme parks applied to a Water Park.

Disney World's Frozen Treats - One of the best ways to stay cool is to try one (or more) of the great Disney World Frozen Treats that are available. Favorites include: the famous Dole Whip and Dole Whip Float, Frozen Lemonade, Tropical Smoothies, Milk Shakes, Ice Cream, Ice Cream Sundaes, the American Dream in Epcot, & Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches.

Florida Brief Rain Storms - Another way to cool off is to enjoy the near daily afternoon rain showers that central Florida are known for. Use these brief showers to cool off and refresh. Don't get soaked and be miserable, but sometimes being a little wet feels good on a hot day.

Take Advantage Of Late Disney Park Hours - During the busy summer season it is not uncommon for the Disney Theme Parks to have extended hours. Earth Day 2010 At Disney World Celebrated With Energy Savings Announcement

As we celebrate Earth Day 2010 today on April 22nd, the Walt Disney World Resort announces a Green Initiative that will result in a major energy savings.

Adopting Green Lighting Choices Nets Big Results

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Apr. 24, 2010 – One small change by Walt Disney World Cast Members has the potential to save enough electricity to power more than one thousand homes for a year.

Disney Cast Members are retrofitting more than 1000 theatrical spotlights and floodlights around the resort with more efficient and longer-lasting light fixtures. Some of the fixtures include LED (light emitting diode) lights which can be 330% more efficient than other lights. For example, a 575-watt spotlight may be replaced with 70-watt LED light that puts out the same light equivalent.

Some of the attractions slated to “lighten up” include Gran Fiesta Tour, Living with the Land, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith, Test Track, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Snow White’s Scary Adventure and many more. Engineers estimate this one small change will save more than 2.5 million kilowatt hours annually, which is enough to power to light 1135 homes for a year.

Walt Disney World Resort recently intensified efforts to embed environmental stewardship into the decisions and actions of Cast Members and guests through a series of science-based programs and policies. The efforts include effectively managing resources through energy management, water conservation and waste minimization.

Disney Fans and Bloggers From NC Got Together For 1st 2719 Hyperion Sweatbox

On April 10, 2010 in Archdale, North Carolina the 1st 2719 Hyperion Sweatbox was held to bring together Disney Fans and Bloggers from all over North Carolina.

The event was organized by George Taylor of the Disney Blogs - 2719 Hyperion & Imaginerding , as well as, Jeff Pepper from 2719 Hyperion and George's brother Andrew Taylor from the Imaginerding site.

Although there were only 15 of us gathered for this initial meet, there was a good mix of Disney Blogs, Disney Podcasts, ex-Disney Cast Members, and Disney Fans represented.

George stated that once he realized how many Disney Blogs were being written by Disney Fans living in North Carolina he thought that it would be great if we could get together in person to interact and thus the idea for the meet, aka Sweatbox, was developed.

For those that must know - according the the folks at 2719 Hyperion:

"SWEATBOX was used as both a noun and a verb by Disney veterans. Originally, the sweatbox was a tiny room about the size of a closet. The closet became a makeshift projection room in the early thirties at the Hyperion studio site. Animators would sweat because of the closeness of the room and/or because of the anxiety of having their work analyzed and scrutinized. Even after the move to the Burbank studio and spacious projection rooms, the term sweatbox was still used. sweatbox became a verb When someone would sweatbox a work in progress or analyze it to see if it was ready to move on to the next stage of production."

After introductions, George and Jeff gave the initial presentation entitled: "Meet Buddy Robinson" which detailed Los Angeles in the 1920's and 1930's as we followed Walt Disney's and the Disney Studio's movements through those formative years.

Afterward, Jeff Crawford and Michael Crawford from Progress City, U.S.A. presented a humerous slideshow depicting their most recent trip to Walt Disney World.

Tron Legacy Monorail At Disney World

Tron Legacy Monorail
Tron Legacy, the upcoming sequel to the 1982 Disney sci-fi hit Tron is making its presence felt at the Walt Disney World Resort.

In a move to promote the movie, the folks at Disney World have chosen to use the monorail as a giant billboard. The graphics look great and can be seen on one of the monorails that travels between the Ticket and Transportation Center and Epcot.

Tron Legacy is scheduled to be in theaters December 17th, 2010.

The sequel will feature Jeff Bridges in a reprisal from his role in the original albeit, 25+ years later. He is still within the Tron Game and now his grown son intends to find out what happened to his father so many years ago.

Here is a synopsis of the movie from Disney Pictures:

Tron:Legacy is a 3D High-Tech Adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the tech-savvy 27-year-old son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), looks into his father’s disappearance and finds himself pulled into the digital world of Tron where his father has been living for 25 years. However you stand on the idea of using the monorails to help cross promote and advertise other Disney businesses the stunning graphics on the monorial look great! It certainly gets your attention.

Disney Shares Gardening Secrets During 2010 Epcot Flower & Gardening Festival

The landscaping at Epcot is impressive year round, but during the 2010 Flower & Garden Festival, which runs from March 3rd – May 16th, the results are inspirational.

Disney World realizes that their “inspired” guests would love to take a little bit of this Disney magic and bring it home to their own yards and gardens.

Disney World Guests Learn From the Experts
During each weekend of the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival, Disney World presents members of their horticultural staff, as well as, nationally recognized gardening experts to lead a series of presentations. Topics such as “Creating Backyard Garden Retreats”, “Disney’s Top Picks For Mixed Containers”, “Easy To Do Water Features”, & “The Small Budget Garden” will be presented during the festival.

The presentations occur on Friday, Saturday, & Sunday with different topics and Gardening experts to speak. There is the “Disney Gardening At Home”(11 am & 2 pm), and the “Great American Gardeners” (12 noon & 3 pm) sessions available to all Epcot guests. Disney World Ticket Tips To Help You Save Money

The tickets for the Disney World theme parks are one of, if not the most expensive portions of your vacation.

Here are some basic tips to keep in mind when you are looking to purchase your tickets:

Disney World does not offer much in the way of discounts on theme park tickets. The current system is called Magic Your Way.

They instead offer a tiered pricing system that favors longer stays. You get a much better deal for stays that are 4 days or longer. See table below:
For days 1 through 3 you average over $70/day. Starting with day 4 the average cost per day goes down dramatically.
You are much better off planning one 6 - 7 day trip instead of two 2-3 day trips.
The park hopping option costs $50 per ticket, no matter how many days you buy the ticket for. This really only makes sense for the longer visits. Otherwise save your money and don't get this option.
You can always upgrade your tickets at the parks, even after you have used them, as long as you upgrade within 14 days of initial use. If you are unsure about Park Hopper option, don't get it and add later if you really need it.
You can not downgrade tickets, or get refund for unused options. If not sure buy lower amount and upgrade when needed, no cost penalty to do so.
